Fire Sprinkler Services in Kansas City and Surrounding Areas

Gen X Fire Sprinkler Services offers services and solutions, starting with inspection and testing. If you’ve just purchased a commercial building, an inspection and testing of any existing fire sprinkler system is vital to your safety, the safety of your workers, and the safety of your business. Regular scheduled testing is also a vital way to ensure your system is functioning optimally.

System Inspections

Valves

Are valves in satisfactory condition? Operational? Accessible? Locked, secured, or monitored? Labeled?

System Gauges

Are they in satisfactory condition? Reading normal pressures? Damaged? Greater than 5 years old?

Fire Department Connection

Accessible? Functional? Damaged? Pressure tested from connection to check valve every 5 years, 150 psi for 2 hours with no drop? Signage installed? Outside bell / horn and strobe installed above connection.

Flow Alarms

Should be checked quarterly and at a minimum annually to verify water flow alarm switch is functional with the alarm panel and outside bell.

Fire Sprinkler Heads

Shall be replaced if damaged, painted, or corroded. Fast response heads shall be tested by U.L. Certified laboratory every 20 years and the standard response heads at 50 years of service. Harsh environment heads shall be tested every 5 years or replaced due to the condition of heads. Dry-type heads shall be tested every 10 years.

Main Drain Test

Shall be performed quarterly and compare results with the previous test. If the test indicates a significant drop in pressure an investigation would begin to find out why such as a partially shut valve or an obstruction in the piping.

Dry System Full Trip Test

Once every 3 years the system will be tested with water until it flows to the remote inspector's test valve, other years can be a partial trip test. Check the air maintenance device for automatic operation, air compressor operation, drain low points, low air switch operation.

Fire Pump Test

Weekly tests are required for all fire pumps and flow water thru the test header to test the performance operation of the pump.

Standpipe Systems

Typically found in the egress stairwells, all valves are accessible, flow water every 3 years and pressure test every 5 years.

Backflow Devices

Shall be tested annually to ensure that the potable water is being protected from cross-contamination.

How Often Should I Have A Professional, Such As Gen X Fire Sprinkler Services, Test My System?

The truth is, the frequency of testing will vary depending on a number of factors, including the type of system you have and the regulations in your local area.  However, a good rule of thumb is to have your fire sprinkler system tested at least once a year. Regular testing can help ensure that your system is functioning properly and identify any potential issues before they become major headaches.

In addition to annual testing, certain components of your sprinkler system may require more frequent testing. This might include control valves and alarm devices, which are critical to the proper functioning of your system.

  • Quarterly Testing

This testing is typically less extensive than annual testing, but it is an important part of ensuring that the fire sprinkler equipment is in good working condition and is ready to perform in the event of a fire.

A qualified technician typically performs the quarterly testing, verifying that the fire sprinkler equipment is receiving power and checking the water level in the pump's suction supply tank or static pressure on the system to ensure it meets the required standards. The technician will also test the operation of the sprinkler's controllers and switches, run the sprinkler briefly to ensure it starts and stops smoothly, and verify that the sprinkler's alarms and signals are functioning correctly. It's essential to note that the specific tasks involved may vary depending on the system type and local regulations, which is why working with a qualified technician is highly recommended. By entrusting this responsibility to a qualified technician, property owners can ensure an effective fire protection system, and regular testing and maintenance of fire sprinkler equipment will help protect their property and occupants. The technician will also provide a detailed report of the testing results to the building owner or responsible party.

  • Annual Testing

Backflow devices are essential components of fire protection systems, preventing contaminated water from flowing back into the public water supply. During testing, a qualified technician will isolate the backflow device, test the pressure and flow rate of the system, simulate a backflow condition, repair or replace damaged components, and document the results for the building owner or responsible party. The specific requirements for annual testing may vary depending on the type of system and local regulations, but regular testing and maintenance are crucial to ensuring proper system functioning and compliance with regulations.

To maintain the proper functioning of fire protection systems and prevent contamination of the public water supply, annual testing and maintenance of backflow prevention devices are necessary. A qualified technician should be consulted to ensure compliance with all relevant regulations, and the testing process generally includes isolating the backflow device, testing system pressure, and flow rate, simulating a backflow condition, repairing or replacing damaged components, and documenting the results. It is important to note that the specific requirements for annual testing may vary, so regular testing and maintenance are necessary to ensure system functionality and compliance with regulations.
